Thursday at Academy
On Thursday we took the reclamation tour. They had dug a pit showing the soil before and after reclamation. A part of the reclamation area included a beautiful lake that was created and the company works with the parks and wildlife using the lake to breed bigger trophy bass. After a fajita lunch we did a porosity lab and worked with Dr. Sam Feagley from Texas A&M on different soils. I was able to find out that my soil from my backyard had a ph reading of 8.0. We had a very fun activity mining chips from chocolate chip cookies and having to get a profit from the mining. We had a wonderful workshop about the Aggregate industry in Texas. The gentleman Jerry McCalip was very good and we felt like Christmas in July, he brought in samples that we could take back with us :) We also were able to create t-shirts using leaves that we had collected in the reclamation areas. Mine was ok but some of the other teachers were VERY talented...
